Academia is brutal. Here’s how to get your research out of the ivory tower and into the hands of people who need it.

I remember the crushing disappointment like it was yesterday. One of my earlier research paper, a labour of love that had consumed months of my life, was rejected. Not just rejected, but desk-rejected — meaning the editor didn’t even bother sending it out for peer review. It felt like a punch to the gut. I was ready to give up. Sound familiar?

Too many brilliant researchers like yourself are toiling away in obscurity, their work languishing in unread journals, gathering dust on forgotten shelves. The truth is, the academic world isn’t just about doing great research. It’s also about playing the game, and playing it smart and this is what I wish I knew when I started.

1. Publish or perish (but do it strategically)

The old adage still rings true. Sadly. Publishing is the lifeblood of an academic career. But don’t just publish anywhere. Target journals that are actually read by your target audience. Look beyond impact factors. Consider the journal’s scope, readership…
